Disclaimer: If one of the writers at MindPuck.ca was playing on a line with Steven Stamkos and Martin St. Louis, there would probably be a Fantasy Focus post written on him too. On that note, could someone please tell me why someone with the above credentials is only owned in 38% of Yahoo! Fantasy leagues? Teddy Purcell is shedding the warm-and-fuzzy Teddy Bear reputation in favour of a streaky sniper persona – #16 is currently riding a 9-game point streak and shows no signs of slowing down. Here are the facts of his recent run:
9 GP
6G, 13A = 19 points
6 multi-point games
4 three-point games
Unless the spirit of Sidney Crosby has entered Purcell’s very being, it appears as though Teddy bear can put up numbers in the right circumstances. Ever since Steve Downie took his haze to Colorado and vacated a spot on the Lightning’s top line, Purcell’s ice time has averaged north of 20 minutes a night in the past 5 games. Moreover, his PP time has jumped to 5 minutes a night in that 5-game stretch playing on a unit with Malone, Stamkos, St.Louis and Hedman/Brett Clark.
In case you think that his production is coming out of left field, Purcell had quite the coming out party last spring where he pumped out 17 points in 18 playoff games. When a man is able to produce a point-per-game in the playoffs when defences are tight, provided his name isn’t Fernando Pisani and it is not 2006, poolies should take note. Purcell is for real folks, and the top line down in Tampa is staying together likely for the remainder of this season.
