So it’s been almost two weeks since my last blog post… safe to say I’ve been slacking off. Since coming to Chicago I’ve been doing a lot of re-adjusting – I’ve been trying to settle into a new city, a new school, and a life where I am spending a lot less time with friends and a lot more on my own.
So what on earth have I been doing to keep busy?
Well I have been going to classes and enjoying them, but that is only Mondays (6-9pm) and Tuesday & Thursday (8am-1pm). During those classes I’ve picked up a ton of new knowledge, but there are a few things that are holding back by learning.
Firstly, I haven’t been able to force myself to actually sit and do homework. Always the procrastinator, I have been really good at getting distracted.
Take today for example:
I wake up around noon, turn on the TV and what do I see? First, it’s Pittsburgh vs. Philadelphia, Game Six.
This has been arguably the most entertaining NHL playoff series in years, so obviously I had to watch the whole game. As soon as that finished, Game Six of Washington vs. Boston starts. I mean, come on! How am I supposed to work when I can sit on a big comfy couch and watch some edge-of-your-seat playoff hockey?
Fortunately, I can’t afford to procrastinate any longer. The pace of my classes is set to really take off and I need to be ready. If I want to become an ace with Ruby on Rails, HTML & CSS, I need to be fully immersed in the Code Academy environment.
This means not going home right after class time. Being the lazy student I am, I have grown accustomed to spending as little time on campus as possible. For the past two weeks, I have been coming home right after class and killing time by reading (Steve Jobs bio… awesome), running errands or watching playoff hockey.
There is an easy solution to my problem: STAY AT SCHOOL! To make sure I get work done, I need to stick around 1871 (our office/school space) and make more efficient use of the resources available to me.
This brings me to my goal setting for this week…
- Monday, Wednesday, Friday – Be at 1871 from 10am – 5pm.
- Tuesday, Thursday – Eat lunch after class & return to 1871 – write short blogs recapping key learning points from class
- DO HOMEWORK, practice in-class exercises & start building
- Keep up MindPuck
Sorry if this post has been boring… I really just needed to give myself a swift kick in the ass. For your entertainment, here are a few photos / videos / links that sum up my past few days…
FYI: My playoff pool fantasy team is currently in first (thanks Giroux). Need big series wins from NYR, BOS & PHO to stay on top.
‘Til next time, folks!
