Jacques Plante Rangers Jersey

Posted by on January 27

This jersey belongs to Doug Ludwig of Toronto, Ontario.

#1 Jacques Plante New York Rangers Home Jersey.

“Jacques Plante played goaltender for the Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, St. Louis Blues, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Boston Bruins in the NHL. Plante was most famous for his time with the Canadiens where he won six Stanley Cup Championships, including five consecutive. He also won six of his seven Vezina Trophies for best goalie in the NHL with the Canadiens and one Hart Trophy for being the most valuable player of their team.

Plante is famous for his innovation of the goalie equipment. During a game on November 1st, 1959, Plante was struck in the face with a hard slapshot off the stick of Rangers forward Andy Bathgate. Plante was forced to leave the game to get stitched up and repair a broken nose. Plante refused to return to the game unless he was able to wear a mask to protect his face. Plante became the first goalie to wear a goalie mask regularly and would be followed by goalies to this day.

Plante only played two seasons with the Rangers before deciding to retire when he required knee surgery. A few seasons after his retirement he was convinced by a former teammate to make a return to the NHL with the expansion team, St. Louis Blues.

Plante was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1978 and his #1 was retired by the Canadiens organization in 1995.”

Thanks to Doug for sending in his jersey!
