#51 Ryan Getzlaf Team Canada 2010 Winter Olympics Jersey.
“In the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia, Team Canada was heavily favourite to win the gold medal as they had a powerhouse roster and were on home soil for the first time since 1988.
Just a week before Anaheim Ducks centre Ryan Getzlaf was to fly out to Vancouver to compete for Team Canada in the Winter Olympics, Getzlaf suffered a high ankle sprain. It was unknown if the star centreman would be able to play in Vancouver and forced Canada General Manager Steve Yzerman to invite Philadelphia Flyers centre Jeff Carter as an extra player incase Getzlaf was unable to play in the tournament. Getzlaf returned to the Ducks lineup the night before he would be leaving for Vancouver. As if he was trying to impress a coach in a tryout, Getzlaf would score two goals and two assists in a dominant performance.
His tryout had worked as Yzerman would give Getzlaf the green light later that night to come join Team Canada. Getzlaf showed little sign of being banged up and brought his usual presence as a skilled power forward for Team Canada. In 7 tournament games Getzlaf would score 3 goals and 7 points.
Lucky for Canada’s sake that Getzlaf was about to play in the tournament as his biggest point of the tournament was setting up his Ducks teammate Corry Perry for the second goal in the gold medal game. Team Canada would go on to win a thrilling overtime game against the United States. Sidney Crosby scored the “Golden Goal” to lift Canada to a 3-2 overtime win.
This gold medal has surely joined Getzlaf’s World U18 Championship and World Junior Championship gold medals in his trophy cabinet.”
