#20 Vladislav Tretiak Soviet Union Jersey.

“Vladislav Tretiak is the most famous Russian goalie of all-time who played for the Soviet Union’s national team. Tretiak played 16 seasons with the CSKA Moscow team in the KHL. He was voted the Soviet’s most valuable player five times throughout his career. Tretiak became internationally famous during the 1972 Summit Series where Tretiak shined for the Soviet who narrowly lost to the Canadians.

Tretiak has an extremely impressive International medal resume. He won three Gold and a Silver medal in the Olympic Games, ten Gold, two Silver, and a Bronze medal at the World Championships, and a Gold medal in both the NHL Challenge Cup and Canada Cup. One of Tretiak’s most famous moments in International Hockey was during the Miracle on Ice at the 1980 Winter Olympics when Tretiak was controversially pulled after the first period of the Semi-Finals against a heavy underdog Team USA. Team USA scored in the dying seconds of the first period to tie the game at 2-2. The pulling of Tretiak was seen as the turning point in the game and USA would go on to win the game 4-3.

Tretiak was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens 138th overall in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft. Tretiak was willing to make the move to the NHL from the KHL, but the Soviet government blocked the move. Tretiak retired from the KHL in 1984 at the age of 32. The Russian goaltender was still able to play, but decided to take early retirement due to not being allowed to play in the NHL and that he was unwilling to play for coach Viktor Tikhonov, the same coach that pulled him in the 1980 Olympics.

The CSKA Moscow organization retired Tretiak’s #20 and in 1989 Tretiak became one of only two players that have been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame while exclusively playing their career’s in Russia. Tretiak remains heavily involved in Russian hockey as he is the President of the Ice Hockey Federation of Russia and was the general manager of Team Russia at the 2010 Winter Olympics.”
