#99 Wayne Gretzky New York Rangers Away Jersey.
“Wayne Gretzky signed a two-year $8 million plus incentives contact as a free agent with the New York Rangers in 1996. Teaming up with former Oilers teammate Mark Messier, Gretzky had solid debut season with the Rangers with 25 goals and 97 points in 82 games. The Rangers made it to the Conference Finals, but fell to the Philadelphia Flyers in five games. Gretzky led the Rangers in playoff scoring with 10 goals and 10 assists. This was Gretzky’s only playoff appearance in the three seasons he played with the Rangers.
In Gretzky’s last NHL season he had nine goals and 62 points in 70 games. This was the only season in his career that he was under a point per game. On April 18th, 1999, Gretzky played in his last NHL game. Gretzky wasn’t able to find the back of the net, but left the fans with a classic Gretzky assist. The Pittsburgh Penguins spoiled the Rangers’ Gretzky good-bye game with a 2-1 overtime victory, but the fans’ focus was all about Gretzky. The fans would give one last lengthy standing ovation as a thank you for all “The Great One” did for the game of hockey.
Gretzky finished his career having achieved greatness by breaking numerous records and setting some that will likely never be broken. In 1,487 regular season games, Gretzky had an incredible 894 goals and 2,857 points.
In tribute to Gretzky at the 2000 All-Star Game, all 30 NHL teams retired his #99. On November 22nd, 1999, Gretzky was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, becoming only the tenth player to bypass the three-year waiting period. The Hockey Hall of Fame announced that Gretzky would be the last player able to bypass the waiting period.
In the minds of most NHL fans Gretzky was and will always be the greatest hockey player to ever play the game.”
Thanks to Scott for sending in his Gretzky collection!
